As the poet once said, today was a good day. And it's still only morning!

President-elect Donald Trump woke to headlines that he is Time Magazine's "Man of the Year", and then proceeded to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. He is the first president to do so since Ronald Reagan.

The buzz around the incoming administration has been mostly positive lately. Trump scored a big win in the Senate yesterday when senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema provided the decisive votes to oust National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) head Lauren McFerran, paving the way for a Republican majority on the board.

Schumer's call for a late-lame-duck vote was derided by Republicans as cynical. A Republican-controlled NLRB is an important piece of the puzzle for approving measures to reshape labor relations and regulations to suit the Trump agenda.

As for the Man of the Year magazine cover, it is a perennially misunderstood title. Officially, according to Time, it denotes "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse."

Of course, it also has to do with selling copies of Time, an increasingly irrelevant legacy media vehicle that was once the most popular newsweekly in America. The beloved work of magazine magnate Henry Luce, Time celebrated its centennial year in 2023, a bittersweet anniversary given its down-trending circulation.

In true Trump fashion, regardless of any of the above, Trump took the moment in stride, saying, "I do want to thank Time Magazine, I've been on the cover many times, I don't know who has the record...every time it's an honor...I thank the whole group at Time, really very professional people."

Regardless of the reason or the slant applied to the choice, Trump was undeniably the "person who most affected the news and our lives...and embodied what was important about the year" in 2024.
