On most days, Governor Kathy Hochul faces the public from behind a wall of base makeup, her cheeks contorted to simulate a smile. What she lacks in charisma, she makes up for in cold calculation.
But in a tweet late last night, Hochul gave us a glimpse of her emotional side.
New York is proud that immigrants from across the globe come here searching for a better life, and we're protecting all New Yorkers by cracking down on violent criminals.

We expect @AGPamBondi's worthless, publicity-driven lawsuit to be a total failure. My full statement: pic.twitter.com/GreaWzYf8c
Yesterday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi brought a lawsuit against New York that names Hochul, AG Letitia James, and DMV head Mark Schroeder. It is Ms. Bondi's stated goal to stop New York's "green light laws" that prohibit law enforcement officers from identifying an individual as an illegal alien when apprehending a suspect.
Hochul fired back in an official statement, but in a far different tone than the Excelsior electorate is accustomed to hearing. In this showdown of sexagenarians (Bondi is 61, Hochul 66), the elder woman fired back at her attacker, dismissing the lawsuit as "worthless" and "publicity-driven".
To Hochul's shrewd eye, Bondi "marched" in front of cameras to deliver a "dramatic" message that amounts to "smoke and mirrors". Hochul fashioned herself as a protector of New Yorkers(!!), shielding us from Elon Musk's "shadowy" DOGE agency. She boldly swore to protect the DMV data of teenagers applying for their driver's licenses.
Hochul closed by predicting that Bondi's lawsuit would be a "total failure". To be clear, this is a departure from the governor's usual staid, corporate legalese lingo.

The governor was scheduled to meet with President Trump today for lunch, but in light of the charges brought against her, she has reportedly postponed the meeting until next week.
To add further context, Hochul was tied to other attempts to hobble Trump. In one instance, Albany has dragged its heels in the process of filling Elise Stefanik's House seat. Firebrand Stefanik was named as ambassador to the United Nations, leaving NY's 21st District open.
Governor Hochul might be the world's worst liar - everyone knows she and Hakeem Jeffries were plotting to leave Elise Stefanik's House seat open in perpetuity. Then they got caught. Now, it's time to hold her accountable. pic.twitter.com/ODPfjG4F2s

Further, Hochul is a central cog in the New York machine that sought to imprison Trump while he campaigned for the presidency. Now that the tables have turned, it's Hochul's turn to fight the feds.
Need a good laugh?

Kathy Hochul who tried to put Donald Trump in prison on fake crimes then bragged about it is on her way to the White House to beg President Trump to not put her in prison for her real crimes.pic.twitter.com/X5OcQOazBS
The question naturally arises: was Hochul attempting to match Bondi's energy, or was she rattled by the accusation that New York is in dereliction of federal law? In either case, this is a fight we will be watching closely.
