Phew! It wasn't Ebola...this time.
New Yorkers heaved a sigh of relief yesterday when initial reports of two individuals possibly infected with the Ebola virus were confirmed to have norovirus instead. Prior to the corrected diagnosis, the patients were dramatically whisked away by FDNY responders in full hazmat suits.
A Harlem City MD urgent care office on 125th Street and Lexington Avenue was briefly the focal point of millions of concerned citizens after two walk-in patients reported symptoms suggestive of the deadly contagious virus that has wracked Africa and spread to all corners of the globe.

The false alarm comes at a time when the American public is wary of a major disease outbreak, although the specific nature of their anxiety often falls on a partisan divide.
On the right, citizens are concerned about the tens of millions of unvetted illegal aliens who came across the borders the US shares with Mexico and Canada. Further, some believe that the same deep state that oversaw the Covid pandemic response might seek to throw a wrench into the Trump administration's dismantling of the bureaucratic ranks inside the Beltway.
On the left, concerns have arisen on social media among those who fear that DOGE-initiated cuts to the federal budget, coupled with increased vaccine skepticism, will result in a new outbreak of a contagious disease.

For the time being, all is well. It was heartening to see a quick and thorough response to a perceived emergency.
