Thousands of supporters of the Iranian Resistance, otherwise known as the MEK, gathered outside the United Nations yesterday to draw attention to the tens of thousands of executions in Iran of those belonging to their movement, many of whom were female.
Demonstrators chanted slogans, sang songs, and waved flags, as evidence of those killed was displayed.
Ali Safavi, of the National Council of Resistance in Iran, offered the following:
"The ultimate solution to the problem of the Iranian regime, is a change from within, by the people of Iran. There is no need for foreign wars. And, engagement with the regime doesn't work.
"The people of Iran can do this; they simply need political support from the outside. We have a plan to govern effectively for all Iranians.
"We want to hold the Iranian regime accountable for decades of executions, crimes against humanity, like the 30k of our movement that were executed all at once in the 1980s."
I asked General Tod Walters, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, who spoke at the rally, how the Trump administration was handling the internal resistance in Iran.
"They are walking a fine line," he commented. "They are not likely to show their hand in these negotiations."
I also spoke with former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Carla Sands, a similar question. She also made comments to the public at the rally.
"There needs to be more dialogue between the MEK and DC," she replied.
The rally continues for a second day today.
