The 2022 elections brought both good and bad news for New Yorkers. The good news first, Republican Nicole Malliotakis, defeated Democrat Max Rose in New York City’s only swing House district. Given Rose’s liberal views and appearance at a George Floyd rally, the historically red voting residents of Staten Island ensured an easy victory for Malliotakis. With 62% of the vote, we can see that certain pockets of the overwhelmingly blue NYC still lean heavily red, good news for the city, state, and country overall. Rep. Malliotakis is even focusing on important social issues, co-sponsoring the H.R.9197 bill, which aims to prohibit the use of Federal funds to develop, implement, facilitate, or fund any sexually oriented program, event, or literature for children under the age of 10, and for other purposes.
It was an important and much needed win in NYC. However, the Governor’s race, rather unsurprisingly had a much different outcome, with replacement for disgraced ex-Governor Cuomo, Kathy Hochul, defeating Republican candidate Lee Zeldin. While Hochul emerged victorious, it was far from a landslide. Zeldin carried most of the State while Hochul won where it really counted, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and of course, the Big Apple. The victory is a tough pill to swallow as Mayor Adams has proven himself to be DeBlasio 2.0 with his only noticeable action having been putting migrants up in five-star hotels, rooftop pools included, despite just a few months prior being dead set against the idea of New York City housing migrants in any fashion. New York desperately needed balance coming in the form of a conservative governor but with the dynamic duo of Adams and Hochul, we could be irreparably damaged on both the city and state level.
With some of Hochul’s headlines being less than savory, who really knows what we can expect from her? I am not certain many of us could have conceived that one of her first orders of business would have been to use tribal funds from the Seneca Nation to build the Buffalo Bills a new stadium, a move that is costing taxpayers over one billion dollars. To add insult to injury, her husband William Hochul is general counsel and a senior VP at Delaware North. You might be wondering why that is important if you have not already heard. Well, Delaware North is a hospitality company that has been operating concessions for the Buffalo Bills for over 30 years. The term, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind and it does not seem there would be any reason to remove Delaware North regardless of where the Bills play. Call me old fashioned but that is what we call a conflict of interest in these parts, quite a blatant one at that. A conservative in this position would have been chased by villagers yielding pitchforks but not only does nobody blink an eye because it is Hochul, but she was elected to a full term as Governor of New York with this verified information floating around.
That was just one of several bad decisions including extending mayoral control over New York City public schools for the next two years. It is hard to imagine any situation in which putting Mayor Adams in charge of the education of over one million students would be a promising idea. We are in a very uncertain situation right now and to be completely honest, New Yorkers have themselves to thank for it. We are a blindly blue city and that is a truly dangerous situation given that we effectively control the entire state as winning a state level election without New York City is nearly impossible.
Zeldin focused on crime, which has steadily been on the rise in New York and includes a 10% rise in rapes and a 30% increase in robberies. These are things your average New Yorker must deal with daily, yet they still voted against the man who vowed to change it and opted to continue to live in a society filled with criminal justice “reforms,” in which violent offenders are released within hours of committing a crime. New York is already a shell of it’s former self and while conservative politicians in the city winning elections for lesser offices is amazing and gives conservatives a presence in blue strongholds, our city will never be restored to its former glory in any way, shape, or form until our Mayor and Governor have the best intentions for New York. Being called the city that never sleeps has never been more ironic because leading Hochul to victory, that is exactly what the residents of our great city must have been doing.
