Already in 2025 the hierarchy of Holy Trinity Orthodox Monastery, seat of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), recognized the threat to its tranquility and natural surroundings with the foreseen wind farm project by Terra-Gen Energy and its subsidiary Rolling Hills Wind, LLC. If constructed as projected, the wind farm would encompass about 75,000 acres located within six towns in Herkimer and Otsego counties. Terra-Gen is a U.S. based company with executive offices in New York City and a development office in San Diego, California. According to Paty Mitchell, manager of communications, "Regarding the sourcing of components for our wind generation facility, the upstate New York project is still in the early stages of development, and suppliers have not yet been finalized. Therefore, it is not accurate to state that project components will be sourced from China or any other specific country at this stage."
The area is not only home to Orthodox monastics but many traditional Amish communities, whose members one often sees in their horse drawn carriages and buggies on the winding roads throughout the counties. An earlier wind project in 2023 was also opposed by the monastery (jordanville.org).
A petition at change.org has as its goal the cessation of the implementation of such a wind farm. The petition highlights that all the turbines would be within 10 miles of the m monastery with many only 0.5 to 2 miles away. Noise is projected to be audible INSIDE buildings even 2 miles away.
Readers may recognize the monastery as it has been reported on since the year 2000 as the home of alleged grave of HIH Anastasia Nicholaevna Romanov, Grand Duchess of Russia, buried there under the pseudonym of “Evgenia Smetisko.” Much information about the monastery and the Museum of Russian History, subsidized in perpetuity by the woman known simultaneously as “Smetisko/Romanov,” can be found in the book: histriabooks.com/product/grand-duchess-anastasia
The public is encouraged to read and consider signing the petition to stop the wind farm at: https://www.change.org/p/wind-turbines-endanger-historic-monastery-hub-of-orthodox-christian-community
The scenic drive from Manhattan to the monastery takes about 3 hours 40 minutes via I-87 N and I-90 W.
