Bluesky Is Bleeding Users — The Anti-Musk Protest Platform Has Lost More Than Half Its Active Base

Bluesky was supposed to be the great escape from Elon Musk's X. When Twitter refugees flooded the platform after the November 2024 elections, it looked like the decentralized upstart might actually have a shot at becoming a mainstream alternative. Nearly two years later, those hopes have collided with reality.

According to data from digital intelligence firm Similarweb, as reported by TechCrunch, Bluesky's mobile app had just 10.4 million monthly active users worldwide in June 2026 — down 27.2% year-over-year. Daily active users fell even harder, dropping 25.6% year-over-year in July to around 3 million. From its peak quarterly average of 22.1 million monthly active users in Q4 2024, the platform has shed more than half its active base. That is not a correction. That is a collapse.

The numbers tell a clear story: the people who joined Bluesky out of spite for Elon Musk did not stay because they loved Bluesky. They were protest users, not converts. Once the immediate anger faded, so did the logins.

Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider — who dropped the "interim" title in July — has reframed the mission accordingly. The company is now less focused on growing Bluesky the app and more focused on building out AT Proto, the underlying open protocol that powers a growing ecosystem of social apps. Projects like BlackSky and Eurosky are building on the protocol, and the video-focused Skylight found early traction earlier this year. Bluesky has also launched Attie, an AI-powered social research tool, and is working on private data support that could attract a different category of user entirely.

Whether that pivot works is an open question. Building a protocol is a very different business than building a social network. The former requires developer adoption and ecosystem patience; the latter requires keeping real users engaged every day. Bluesky is now betting on the former while losing at the latter, added Tech Crunch.

Meanwhile, the competitive landscape has shifted decisively. X, despite constant predictions of its demise, still commands 302 million monthly active users on mobile as of June 2026, with web visits up 5.3% year-over-year. The real winner in the post-Bluesky shuffle appears to be Meta's Threads, which posted daily active user growth of 21.3% year-over-year to 147 million in July — with website visits up 112% year-over-year. Whatever market Bluesky was supposed to capture, Threads is capturing it instead.

Bluesky now has nearly 46 million registered accounts — but registered is not the same as active, and active is not the same as engaged. The platform that was going to dethrone X has instead become a lesson in the difference between a protest movement and a product.
