Comcast has started offering a feature that turns millions of newer Xfinity internet routers into motion-sensitive devices. The feature, which is called WiFi Motion, forms part of the Xfinity Shield home protection service, which was launched on August 18 and offers a range of tools to protect homes from physical and cyber threats.

WiFi Motion, which can be turned on and off at will, uses the Xfinity router to analyze changes in the radio-frequency signals that make up a home’s Wi-Fi network. This allows it to detect when someone has entered or left a room, without the need for cameras or other sensors to capture images or data.

WiFi Motion is an opt-in feature that is available to customers who have Xfinity Internet service and are using a compatible Xfinity Gateway, including the XB7 and later models. It can be managed through three different modes – Home Watch, Away Watch and Dark Watch – which can be selected from within the Xfinity app. For example, users can choose to have WiFi Motion enabled when they are at home and do not want to be disturbed, but disabled when they are away from home. Motion is not collected in a way that would allow Comcast to identify, or locate, specific individuals. However, as with any information generated by and collected about the use of Comcast services, information generated by WiFi Motion may, in certain circumstances, be shared with third parties. This would include, for example, in connection with any law enforcement investigation or proceeding, in connection with any dispute to which Comcast is a party, and in accordance with any court order or subpoena.

WiFi Motion is not the first attempt to use Wi-Fi or radio-frequency signals to sense motion. For example, Linksys tested out a feature several years ago that used wireless signals to detect movement. More recently, companies including Wiz and Philips Hue have launched products that use Wi-Fi or other radio-frequency signals to detect motion. However, until recently, the technology has not been accurate or reliable enough to offer as a service to consumers.

That has now changed, and WiFi Motion is the latest example of a feature that uses WiFi-based motion sensing to detect when someone is present in a home. In addition to WiFi Motion, the Xfinity Shield service also includes Xfinity CyberSecure, which provides network-level protection against threats including malware, hacking attempts, phishing and other types of online threats.

It also includes a range of family safety features, including the ability to set limits on screen time, to set device-based allowances, to pause the internet at set times, and to create schedules for individual family members. The service is available at no additional cost to customers with Xfinity Internet service, although there is a $15-per-month Shield Select version that includes a range of additional hardware and services, including an indoor camera, door and window sensors, cloud-based video recording, and 24/7 urgent response.
