New York State requires certain professionals to fulfill the important role of being a mandated reporter of child abuse or maltreatment.
Mandated reporters are required to report suspected child abuse or maltreatment when, in their professional capacity, they are presented with reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or maltreatment, per the New York State Office of Children and Family Services ("OCFS").
The training is offered online, and includes a series of different exercises, one of which is raising eyebrows involving a potentially suicidal transgender child.
The feedback portion of the exercise directs users to OCFS' Resources for Professionals for additional information to support LGBTQ youth, as well as videos, webinars and education on gender transition and pronoun usage, and more.
It's worth mentioning that OCFS recognizes and supports the gender identity of all youth, and believes it is "critical to provide resources that are affirming and supportive, especially for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) youth."
Also according to OCFS, "transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary (TGNC) youth face increased risks for depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts," so it takes the position that it's important to affirm "needs and experiences related to gender transition."
One of the resources OCFS highlights specifically is a video detailing "medical options for transgender youth" from UCLA university in which hormones and gender affirming surgeries for kids are gleefully described and celebrated as being successful for treating gender dysphoria.
Further, the discredited World Professional Association for Transgender Health ("WPATH") standards of care are cited in the video as if credible, even though a whistleblower previously leaked files that revealed shocking, widespread malpractice involving children in the hands of WPATH-aligned transgender medical providers.
The OCFS website also lacks information about the well-established risks of "gender affirming care" for children, or what the Trump Administration more accurately calls the "chemical and surgical mutilation of children," and OCFS ignores the tragic experiences of detransitioners.
In fact just last week, on the heels of the DOJ's announcement that it had sent more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics performing transgender medical procedures on children, the Federal Trade Commission held a Panel Discussion that featured the experiences of detransitioners, whistleblowers and others impacted by the rush to affirm children in transgender identities, including a Connecticut mother whose gender-confused daughter committed suicide.
It's worth adding that the FTC is currently looking into deceptive trade practices employed by gender affirming care providers, including a claim made by trans care providers to emotionally blackmail parents by suggesting their child will commit suicide if they are not medically transitioned.
That is a false claim, as per the Supreme Court Case United States v. Skrmetti.
In fact, Justice Alito asked about suicide rates at oral argument during Skrmetti, and the ACLU lawyer admitted there was actually no evidence to support the idea that medical transition reduces adolescent suicide rates, an assertion backed by the UK's Cass Report.
But that hardly seems to matter to OCFS which has chosen to align with progressive organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, which embrace transitioning children, despite the known risks and in defiance of the Trump Administration.
