There is a famous story about how Leonardi DaVinci painted The Last Supper. He searched and found a breathtaking handsome local whom he used as inspiration to paint Jesus. For over ten years, however, he could find no model for Judas, until one day he stumbled upon another worn and weathered man who would inspire him to paint Judas. “Judas” began to cry as Leonardo began to paint. “Why are you crying?” asked the great artist. “Do you not recognize me? I am the man after whom you modeled Jesus a decade ago!” The epitome of goodness had chosen to walk down a path of perdition leading to suffering and distress. Such a scene played out recently in Harriman, New York with a former NYPD police officer.
A plea of guilty was entered by former NYPD policeman Andrew Nguyen for charges which included soliciting and receiving bribes, conspiracy to distribute narcotics and possessing a firearm in connection with drug trafficking. The bribes allegedly surpassed $30,000 from a trafficer dubbed “CC-1.”
How egregious were Nguyen’s illegal activities? During the short 3 year period ending in 2023 he was accused of transporting a plethora of drugs including roughly 8 kilos of cocaine, but in order to escape suspicion he carried the paperwork authorizing him to carry a NYPD firearm. It is reported that he would have used the firearm to come to the aid of the drug trafficker if an altercation had ensued.
On June 22 Nguyen will be sentenced, while 147-168 months imprisonment is within sentencing guidelines. Fines could be in the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
According to a U.S attorney, "Nguyen betrayed the community he swore to protect.”
It would seem that all humanity has inherited a bit of Jesus and a bit of Judas. How we choose is left to the individual.
