From the desk of President Trump: The Kennedy Center board unanimously voted to immediately shut down the building for safety reasons. The $250 million reconstruction of the building can now go forward only if the court rules that the Trump appointed board can add the President's name to the building.
Trump posted:
"The Board of The Kennedy Center today agreed, almost unanimously, to close the Building for Safety reasons, and so that it can begin the process of Reconstruction.
The closing will take place immediately, however, the Renovation and Reconstruction, which is a very large and complex job, cannot begin until such time as the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board's approved name.
If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place."
Part of the ceiling of the Kennedy Center collapsed during the rain last weekend. The $250 million in renovations to the building to make repairs and to restore it to glory have been requested by the Trump board at the center since they took over the arts complex in Washington.
The case is currently before the D.C. Circuit, which will determine whether the Trump-appointed board has the power to rename the building to "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump" as they voted to in August. A federal judge had blocked an earlier attempt by the board to close the building, temporarily, but the board is arguing that they need to include Trump's name on the building in order for the center to financially survive. If the court doesn't rule in their favor, the board is warning of "certain fiscal collapse."
Without a court order to add Trump's name to the building, he said he will not agree to go forward with the reconstruction and the center will remain closed until he gets what he wants.
