The recent cold snap in New York City, during which 18 souls have perished due to exposure, coincides with the resignation of Molly Wasow Park, who has been the head of the NYC Department of Social Services. She has handed Mayor Mamdani her letter of resignation.
While one assumes that the buck stopped at her desk for the recent demise of unsheltered New Yorkers during the historic cold snap, Park also cited the uncertain nature of her position in the Mamdani administration as a burden on her family, her personally and the agency she led.
While the Mamdani administration has publicly thanked Park for her service, it has also promised the installation of a new commissioner in the foreseeable future.
Park was appointed by former Mayro Eric Adams in 2023 and had already been the first deputy commissioner of the Department of Homeless Services. She was noted for expanding programs so that people could move from shelters into more permanent housing. She had appeared beside Mayor Mamdani ever since his administration initiated CODE BLUE in January. The city is under scrutiny and is the subject of criticism for the number of exposure deaths during the onset of arctic temperatures since January 2026. While other factors may have preceded her departure, the intense demand for resolution of the situation for vulnerable homeless people in New York City cannot be discounted as the proverbial snowflake which caused the avalanche.
