Stephen K. Bannon has been sentenced to prison for four months. US Disctrict Court Judge Carl Nichols has ordered Bannon to report to prison on July 1st. Nichols also revoked bail. The charge: contempt of Congress, for Bannon's refusal to honor a subpoena to speak in the matter of the January 6 trial.
Bannon was sentenced in October 2022 after he was deemed guilty of ignoring a subpoena from the House select committee convened to probe the events of Jan. 6 at the Capitol. Nichols agreed to stay the sentence while Bannon appealed.
In May, the D.C. Court of Appeals upheld the conviction. Bannon requested a further stay while attempting to appeal the conviction to the Supreme Court, but Nichols denied it.
The optics are awful for the Biden administration, which has conducted a dawn raid on Roger Stone, buried exculpatory evidence in the trial of General Michael Flynn, and the persecution of other key Trump cabinet members.
A longer version, including comments by Bannon's attorney below:
The timing and length of the sentence effectively stop Bannon from joining the Trump campaign in the case that his services were required, and will remove Bannon's voice on the popular podcast WarRoom.org during the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.
