New York City is frigging freezing. The National Weather Service says winter storm Elliott is a “once-in-a-generation” weather situation. A “bomb cyclone” has arrived in Gotham just in time and should remind us that global warming and AOC are expensive and dangerous propositions. She’s probably in Florida or at home with the heat cranked up.
Unfortunately, you might not be able to afford the same basic necessity.
New York households are facing soaring costs thanks to Democrat policies and foreign entanglements. The energy price cap went up again in October, 2022. Since August 2022, the average price of electricity per unit has increased from 28p per kWH to 52p per kWH with a 1p increase to the standing charge of 46p.
Con Edison, the main utility operator serving the majority of New York City, forecasts residential power bills to climb by 22% on average this winter. More good news, gas heating bills will rise 32%. Also on the horizon, New York’s power demand is expected to hit 23.9 gigawatts this winter, up 2.8% from last year's high.
Unlike worshippers of “climate change” and AOC, normals understand Mother Nature is a force that is Herculean to control. The Left loves taking on imaginary dragons; it is a referendum on their Grand Canyon size void of ideas to solve real issues. It is possible to lower energy costs. Let’s examine what is in human power and will help the economy and minimize citizens from suffering through the cold and heartless climate.
First, due to the Biden administration reversing President Trump’s energy independence, all of America is saddled with the burden of being energy slaves to higher prices and dirtier oil from foreign powers. They say it’s only environmentally unsound to drill in the United States. Democrat logic makes it environmentally conscious to drill abroad. Solution; drill.
Second, the Democrats' obsession with Russia Russia Russia and the consequent war in Ukraine actually impacts New York City. Big Apple residents face a sharp rise in electricity bills. This is caused by a “rebound in local demand boost[ing] prices of natural gas”, according to the New York State's power grid operator. Solution; should politicians feel the need to insert themselves in foreign conflicts, they should first make sure that the necessary components of normal living in America are in place.
Public Service Commissioner John Howard said that the state’s climate-action racket will cost New Yorkers “hundreds of billions of dollars.” How’d he come up with these figures? As per a NY Post article from May 17, 2022, “they come directly from a report commissioned by the Climate Action Council, which the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act created and tasked with drafting a scoping plan to implement the 2019 law.” Implementing this financial boondoggle demands major cuts in greenhouse-gas emissions as the state transitions from fossil fuels to renewables.
No problem. Solar panels to the rescue. Oh, wait. They don’t work in cold weather. As per Revision Energy, “Even if the sun is present, in particularly cold climates batteries cannot accept a charge and it is advisable to not use any type of solar system if it is below 41 degrees Fahrenheit outside.” Risk on - people can take a chance on 42 degrees. Revision Energy continues, “if you pair solar with a battery backup, your home can thrive in the winter, even during a famous New England winter power outage.” By the way, you know how you charge a battery? With electricity. You know how you make electricity, with coal. You know how you get coal, by mining. This tears up the environment.
Since Friday, it’s been below freezing in New York City. But it “feels like” an invigorating -2 degrees.
Serious question; why haven’t any of the Democrat rulers made a statement urging constituents to turn off the heat? To rely on solar? We’ve barely heard from our Democrat “climate warrior” rulers that never fail to miss an opportunity to bloviate about “environmental justice.” Why have they sat out the winter storm?
The only statement we’ve heard from the Mayor’s office on anything “green” is the following tweet, “Wider sidewalks, more green spaces and fewer cars. That’s our plan for the future of 5th Avenue.” Translation, going “green” to Democrats involves a Communist approach; the public sector forces its will on the masses. Thank gosh “diversity” will ensure the best people are picked to oversee the destruction. “Reimagining” 5th Avenue, one of the wealthiest zip-codes in the universe, iconic tourist destination, and business and residential goldmine, will cost taxpayers a fortune. How many stores will be razed in order to create “more green spaces''? No benefits to citizens have been outlined; “going green” explains everything, naturally.
